Rear-reel operation has a lot of advantages, both for your operators, and your business. Working all day directly in front of a loud hot engine just isn’t a great idea. The noise and heat are stressful, requiring more breaks, and less efficiency and impaired team communication while on the job. Long-term exposure to high noise levels can lead to hearing loss and result in worker’s compensation claims. Rear-reel is quieter, cooler, and generally built for job efficiency and faster job completion. Front-reel also creates challenges when the operator steps up into the cab to drive to the next jobsite. That up-front reel design obstructs highway sightlines, increasing accident risk, and its cantilevered weight increases wear and tear on the front suspension, tires, and steering, increasing maintenance costs.
There are several key points to consider. Power comes first. Will the unit have the water pressure and vacuum draw to effectively break up and remove big-pipe clogs and deep pit sludge? Aquatech trucks offer the biggest available pumps and blowers, available driven directly off the transfer case for minimal power loss from chassis powerplant. Payload comes next. Does the unit have both the water capacity you need to keep clearing pipe, and the waste capacity to carry away the resulting sludge, all without producing a truck that’s too long and heavy to be practical? Aquatech units provide a range of size options, each of which has class-leading capacity for their footprint. Then consider safety. Are there built-in features to protect your trained operators while using and moving the unit? All Aquatechs features rear-reel operation, for reduced hearing loss risk, as well as better visibility from the cab, reducing highway accident risk. Standard out of stow boom alarm, and dual e-stops on both control panel and wireless remote further protect operators. Finally, look into unit reliability and maintainability. This can be difficult to assess, but if a combo jetter is loaded with complex proprietary systems requiring specialized equipment to diagnose, and features parts only available from the manufacturer, it could be difficult to keep running. While combo jetters can be used for light excavation, including potholing and daylighting, their high-volume water pumps are optimized for use in multi-nozzle sewer jetting applications. For long-duration digging, such as repeated potholing or large-scale excavation, Aquatech recommends the use of an auxiliary dig package, using an additional pump tailored to the high-pressure, low-flow hydro excavation application. Units set up with this configuration provide optimal performance both when jetting pipes and digging holes.
